President of the United States, William J. Clinton

Mission
A gift to be presented by President Clinton and the First Lady to the 19 Heads of State of the NATO countries in Washington to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Organization. This was the largest assembled group of world leaders to date in Washington, DC. The budget was set at the statutory limit of $1000.

The Thinking
This project had multiple objectives; to incorporate and represent all participant countries as this was a NATO event and not a U.S. one, to convey equal partners and use language of the organization- English and French, and to incorporate the NATO anniversary seal and the Presidential seal.

The Solution
Utilize color ceramics to identify all countries by their respective flags (silver and glass would not work). To ensure equal placement, we used a Knights of the Round Table approach, thus the use of the bowl for the president and the plate for the first lady. The gift was sourced in the US. Cost came in at 50% less than budgeted. The President selected our design over all other options.
